So, we are in NYC covering fashion week . . . and this trip wouldn't be worth it without visiting Nicola Formichetti's Pop Up store . . . I swear, I was expecting Rico greeting me at the door but all we got was a pseudo-tattoo person to greet us!!

The store itself was striking . . . though I can't help but think of "I've seen this before" moment!

Oh that right . . . KoKon To Zai!! This shop is like the NYC flagship of KTZ!!! WTF!

I mean, down to the styling of the mannequins to the mirrored walls . . . and lets just say, I was a little underwhelmed . . . the clothes that were in there were pretty much a stylist wish lists on shoots . . . but as far as the regular All American Cheerleaders who wants to be as cool as Lady GaGa . . . well, you can come but don't expect to touch . . . cuz a vintage Versace silk shirt will cost you $1250!!

I mean, GaGa's famous gun bra was there and all that leather harness and weirdly decorated sunglasses . . . all it spoke to me as . . . well, let's just say . . . I'M OVER IT!

Though I did buy a Nico-Panda t-shirt for $40! and I did ran into a friend that worked the visuals for the store . . . but other than that . . . if you like to see what GaGa is gonna wear on her next tour . . . this is a sure place to come to whilst you are here in NYC!

PS: The soundtrack in that store . . . well, there's a live DJ and let's just say . . leaves quite a a little bit to be desired . . .

I dug out of the house last night to see the new YSL documentary. I thought it was part haunting of yves, part auction documentary, part pierre's veiled struggle, part moving architectural digest. It in many respects was a moving, talking, color version of hedi slimane's work on the estate (http://www.hedislimane.com/fashiondiary/index.php?id=57). The majority of the film was dolly shots through the couples' homes accompanied by soft piano tracks and various fountains flowing as they appeared on screen. During these shots doors opened by themselves, lights turned on and off, walls were stripped bare--some shots lingered so long it was hard not to feel some sense of misunderstood nostalgia. It's like seeing blood on the walls but not understanding how it got there. I guess this idea goes hand in hand with an overwhelming question the film presented about the soul of things and belongings. For me the most beautiful scenes were those of Château Gabriel, the saddest of the auction in Paris, and the most fashion driven a tie between the arena show and all of the finale wedding dresses. I won't lie in that I loved the scenes with Betty Catroux. I recommend it to everyone.

McQueen at the Met

I got a chance to make it over to the McQueen exhibit at the Met on Sunday and it was well worth it. It really is nice to see some of McQueen's work throughout history in such close proximity. I mean seeing pieces from the beginning of his career was quite the gift for me. This has got to blow the general public away. It truly does show off the craftmanship behind this man's genius. It really does bring a new level of respect. Even pictures sometimes can't do justice especially with clothes in which many times the details are lost. That for me is the best part of shows anyway. It was quite packed so it was hard to truly enjoy the exhibit, the outfits were there though. The only critique I have is that it seemed a bit too romanticized, but I guess in some ways that's appropriate especially in regards to the title of the exhibit. I can't wait to read the book. I figure I will make it back a few more times when it's a bit quieter. You should definitely go see it if you are in the area. I would recommend stopping into the Richard Serra exhibit while you are at it.

The Mole People

I took a recommendation and read Jennifer Toth's, "The Mole People" last week. The book was quite an eye-opening piece that unearthed New York's underground subculture made up of thousands of people who live under the subway system. Toth's firsthand experience really covers everything. She discusses the history of similar civilizations, literary references, current police enforcement to the definitive communities, artists and haunting individuals she comes in contact with. For me it took a good 100 pages to really get into it, but after that I was sold. I found the best parts of the book were the ones that described the varied landscapes and eccentric spaces (i.e. ten-thousand-year old standing forest buried deep under the Upper West Side and rumored tiled rooms). I couldn't help but constantly reference the Morlocks from X-Men though while reading it which made it all the more interesting for me. Apparently Toth had to move out of the city for safety upon completing the project due to some of the relationships she formed during the book. It's a good read that definitely makes riding the metro a bit more interesting.
